What's New in After-Market Tow-Bars:

Retractable Towbars; As the name suggests, are bars that ‘retract’ or ‘fold-away’. This takes the notion of discreet towbars a step further than the already established detachable.

Advantages of a Retractable bar are :

Maintains the looks of the vehicle with many retractable bars being completely invisible when not in use.

Allows continued use of PDC (Parking Distance Control) systems. A fixed bar can very easily be picked up by such reversing sensors, rendering them useless.

The bar, unlike a detachable, is always there, ready to use. There is no fumbling through a packed luggage compartment to find the neck.

There are no fears of ‘loss’ or ‘theft’ as you get with a detachable bar.

Disadvantages of a Retractable bar are:

As with swan-neck and detachable bars, the retractable does not allow the use of bolt-on Towbar mounted accessories (stabalisers, bolt-on cycle carriers, bumper protection plates etc). [note. Tow-ball stabilisers and cycle carriers can still be used]

The level of engineering involved in making a ‘fold-away’ mechanism that can take the stresses of towing naturally pushes up the price.
